Breakdown of Sutter County Tobacco Related Diseases Deaths

On average, residents of Sutter County die at a higher rate from Tobacco related diseases than other California residents. In fact, out of the 58 counties in California, Sutter county has some of the highest death rates for tobacco related diseases.

With 58 being the worst - we rank 54 in lung cancer rate, 54 in heart disease rate; 56 in stroke rate; and 43 in chronic lower respiratory disease rates.

Preventing tobacco use among youth

Tobacco use is primarily started and established in adolescence. 9 out of 10 cigarette smokers try smoking by age 18. Every day, more than 3,200 adolescents 18 years or younger smoke their first cigarette.

Why Kids Use Various Tobacco Products

Flavors added to tobacco products can make them more appealing to youth. In 2014, 56% of middle school students and 73% of high school students that used tobacco in the past 30 days reported using flavored tobacco.

Summary

With over 15,500 flavors on the market, flavored non-cigarette tobacco products have exploded in popularity. Flavored products like these are addicting a new generation to nicotine just as national efforts to reduce tobacco use had begun yielding positive results. With the increased use of flavored tobacco come increased risk for serious health harms for Sutter County youth.
